SWISS PLATFORM ON HIV/AIDS AND INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

Basel, 28 June 2012 - aidfocus.ch supports the key messages on HIV, family planning and sexual and reproductive health and rights, formulated and launched by the UK Consortium on AIDS and Development and the UK SRHR Network, to be presented at the London Family Planning Summit, hosted by DFID and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will be taking place on the 11th of July.

“Integrating our efforts to raise the bar for women’s health through: rights, access, investment, security and equity.

1. Respect, protect and promote the sexual and reproductive rights of women and girls in all of their diversity and throughout their lives.
2. Overcome structural, legal and cultural barriers to accessing family planning, sexual and reproductive health and HIV services.
3. Invest in quality family planning, sexual and reproductive health and HIV services, integrating these when possible; and partnership with networks and coalitions of women living with HIV and other women most affected by HIV.
4. Protect and ensure the safety and security of women and girls.
5. Guarantee all people have full equity in accessing quality family planning, sexual and reproductive health and HIV services.”

HIV, AIDS, sex and reproduction are intimately connected and linking sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and HIV responses is a fast moving and dynamic field. HIV infection is the predominant sexual health issue facing the world today, especially as it is the leading cause of death in women of reproductive age. It is becoming increasingly evident that a united sexual and reproductive health and HIV response offers one of the most effective routes to reaching the many people vulnerable to HIV infection or to those already living with HIV. It is also clear that the Millennium Development Goals will not be achieved without ensuring access to SRH services and an effective global response to the HIV epidemic. London | The UK Government and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with UNFPA and other partners will host a groundbreaking summit that will mobilize global policy, financing, commodity, and service delivery commitments to support the rights of an additional 120 million women and girls in the world's poorest countries to use contraceptive information, services and supplies, without coercion or discrimination, by 2020. The London Summit on Family Planning aims to: 1. Revitalize global commitments to family planning and access to contraceptives as a cost-effective and transformational development priority, 2. Improve the access and distribution of contraceptive supplies; and 3. Remove and reduce barriers to family planning.
