Combien de fois ai-je pensé à cette phrase lors des discussions que nous avons eues dans le cadre de la conférence d’aidsfocus «Positive Motherhood» d’avril 2007! Car c’est souvent la peur d’être stigmatisées et marginalisées qui dissuade les jeunes femmes de se faire tester ou, si elles se font tester malgré tout et que le résultat est positif, de prendre des mesures empêchant la transmission du VIH à leur enfant. Dans la plupart des cas, c’est par crainte d’être «découverte», avec tout ce que cela implique comme conséquences, qu’une jeune mère, allant contre sa conviction intime, n’allaite pas exclusivement ou ne nourrit pas son bébé avec des aliments pour bébés, mais, comme c’est habituel et culturellement ancré, lui donne aussi bien le sein que des aliments solides. Dans quel état de conflit intérieur, de déchirement et d’angoisse face au spectre de la stigmatisation et de la médisance doit être une jeune maman pour qu’elle prenne le risque de transmettre le virus à son propre enfant!

«C’est la parole des gens qui peut faire mourir une personne. La maladie ne parle pas, la maladie ne dit rien, mais ce que les gens vont dire, ça peut tuer quelqu’un», déclare très justement Kadiatou, 28 ans, dans l’un des portraits poignants publiés dans l’étude de IAMANEH Suisse.

La peur est bien réelle, pas de doute là-dessus. Il existe trop d’exemples de négation de soi, d’isolement et d’exclusion sociale de mères ou futures mères séropositives, conduisant parfois à des situations dramatiques.

Tout le monde sait aujourd’hui que, dans le domaine du VIH/sida, la stigmatisation mine une bonne partie des efforts de prévention, de traitement et de soins, et qu’elle peut affaiblir l’impact de programmes pourtant très prometteurs. Le meilleur moyen de vaincre la stigmatisation et le dénigrement est d’en parler ouvertement. L’expérience montre à quel point les personnes vivant avec le VIH/sida jouent un rôle important dans les discussions et dans l’élaboration et la mise en œuvre de programmes et d’actions, car elles savent de quoi elles parlent et peuvent donner un visage et une voix à la maladie.

Dans ce sens, la création de LHIVE – organisation nationale de personnes vivant avec le VIH/sida en Suisse – est à saluer vivement, tout comme celle d’UN+, le groupe de plaidoyer et d’entraide des collaboratrices et collaborateurs séropositifs de l’ONU, qui dispose désormais de son propre site Web. Kenia | Fastenopfer

Die kenianische Bewegung der christlichen Studierenden (MIEC/IMCS) betreibt mit der Unterstützung von Fastenopfer gezielte Informationspolitik an höheren Schulen und an Universitäten. Sie setzt sich dafür ein, dass HIV- positive Menschen nicht stigmatisiert werden und Nachbarschaftshilfe erhalten. Über das Peer-Group-Modell informieren, beraten und begleiten christliche Studierende ihre Kolleginnen und Nachbarn in Städten sowie auf dem Land.

MIEC/IMCS ist die Bewegung katholischer Studierender, die 1921 unter dem Namen Pax Romana gegründet wurde. Sie setzt sich für die Reflexion und die Verbreitung christlicher Werte ein und regt zu verantwortungsvollem Handeln an. Die Bewegung bietet den Studierenden ein Forum, um untereinander Erfahrungen auszutauschen. Sie richtet sich aber auch an die benachteiligten Bevölkerungsschichten. Der Titel der vierjährigen HIV/Aids-Kampagne lautet: „HIV/Aids ist Wirklichkeit. Ich kenne meinen Status. Und Du?“

Mitglieder von MIEC/IMCS werden in Animation und Peer-Group-Beratung zu HIV/Aids aus- und weitergebildet. Diese führen zusammen mit ihren nationalen Bewegungen Kampagnen und Workshops durch, die Jugendliche nicht nur informieren und sensibilisieren, sondern auch dazu anregen, einen Aids-Test zu machen. HIV-positive Jugendliche werden beraten und begleitet und an die bereits bestehenden Anlaufstellen ihrer Länder verwiesen.

Bern, 26. April – „Wenn sich ein Kind im Mutterleib, unter der Geburt oder beim Stillen mit dem Aids-Erreger ansteckt, dann ist das eine Tragödie. Dies umso mehr, als es heute Möglichkeiten gibt, die Übertragung des HI-Virus von der infizierten Frau auf ihr Kind zu verhindern, jedenfalls in reichen Ländern wie der Schweiz. Doch die meisten Frauen haben dieses Glück nicht, wie an einer von der Schweizerischen Fachplattform für HIV/Aids und internationale Zusammenarbeit (aidsfocus.ch) organisierten Tagung mit dem mehrdeutigen Titel „Positive Mutterschaft“ zu erfahren war. Schweizer Hilfswerke schlagen Alarm: 2,3 Millionen Kinder sind in den Ländern des Südens HIV-positiv. Laut Schweizer Hilfswerken könnte die Aids-Übertragung von der Mutter aufs Kind mit relativ einfachen Methoden vermieden werden. Nicht so in armen Ländern: Nach Angaben der UNO leben weltweit mindestens 2,3 Millionen HIV-positive Kinder. Praktisch alle Kinder wurden von ihren Müttern angesteckt - und täglich werden es mehr. Diese alarmierende Situation stellt auch für Schweizer Hilfswerke eine Herausforderung dar. Le reportage « Densile und ihr Kind überleben », diffusé le 6 mai dernier sur la chaîne alémanique SF DRS dans le cadre de l’émission « mitenand », raconte le combat d’une jeune Swazie contre la maladie. La caméra l’accompagne dans ses tâches quotidiennes, auxquelles elle peut à nouveau faire face depuis qu’elle est sous traitement.

La Croix-Rouge suisse (CRS) s’engage aux côtés de ceux qui, comme Densile, doivent vivre avec le VIH/sida. L’organisation a mis en place un programme de thérapies antirétrovirales sans précédent dans le pays. C’est notamment nécessaire pour que les femmes enceintes porteuses du virus ne le transmettent pas à leur bébé.

Expériences de personnes vivant avec le VIH/SIDA sous thérapies antirétrovirales gratuites au Mali. Ce rapport par Noemi Steuer (mandatée par IAMANEH Suisse) est basé sur une recherche qualitative et anthropologique effectuée à Bamako et à Mopti (Mali/Afrique). L’accent de ce travail porte sur les expériences des personnes vivant avec le VIH/SIDA (PVVIH) et les moyens qu’elles mettent en oeuvre pour surmonter leur situation difficile. Après la libéralisation d’accès aux thérapies anti-rétrovirales (ARV) qui a eu lieu en 2004 ce travail contient aussi des considérations sur une modification de l’offre préventive.(2006)

Mai 2007 fand in Basel die Gründungsversammlung von LHIVE, der nationalen Organisation der Menschen mit HIV und AIDS in der Schweiz, LHIVE gibt ihnen und dem Thema HIV und AIDS ein Gesicht und eine Stimme. LHIVE kämpft für die Gleichstellung der Menschen mit HIV und AIDS und für eine von der HIV-Infektion unabhängige Lebensqualität in allen Lebensbereichen. LHIVE kämpft mit differenzierter Aufklärung gegen die Diskriminierung und Stigmatisierung von Menschen mit HIV und AIDS und fördert eine nachhaltig wirksame Prävention.

Geneva, 21 May 2007 - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon addressed a General Assembly session focused on the response to the HIV and AIDS pandemic. He pledged his commitment and sustaining the UN response to the AIDS crisis. The Report of the Secretary-General prepared for this year’s review shows that expanded treatment efforts continue to gather momentum. However, over the past two years, the number of people living with HIV has increased in every region of the world. The report concludes that many countries, especially those with low incomes, cannot achieve the universal access goals without external resources; therefore there is a pressing need for more international funding for public health and development.

1. mai 2007 - Un accord conclu avec des industries pharmaceutiques va permettre de réduire le prix de 16 antirétroviraux (ARV) de nouvelle génération dans 66 pays en développement, ont annoncé mardi la Fondation Clinton et l’initiative Unitaid. Grâce à cet accord, négocié par la Fondation de l’ancien président américain Bill Clinton avec les compagnies indiennes de production de médicaments génériques Cipla et Matrix, le prix des ARV de deuxième ligne baissera de 25 pour cent dans les pays à faibles revenus et de 50 pour cent dans ceux à revenus intermédiaires, a précisé un communiqué de cette Fondation qui milite en faveur de la lutte contre le sida.

Les traitements de deuxième ligne sont prescrits aux patients séropositifs de plus en plus nombreux qui ont développé des résistances aux traitements plus anciens, mais ils coûtent 10 fois plus chers que les médicaments de première ligne. Près d’un demi million de personnes devraient en avoir besoin en 2010. (PlusNews)

May – When the President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, announced Brazil’s intention to issue a compulsory license for Merck’s HIV/AIDS drug Efavirenz, AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), the move was seen as as a victory for global AIDS activism and AIDS patients worldwide. President Lula de Silva’s decision comes after reports of a breakdown in negotiations between Brazil and the drug giant Merck. Brazil’s decision to issue a compulsory license for the drug, which will allow the country to manufacture the drug or to buy generic versions, comes on the heels of Thailand’s recent move to issue a compulsory license for Abbott’s AIDS drug, Kaletra.

Laos, 25 avril 2007 - La dernière chose que Yinka Jegede-Ekpe aurait pu imaginer, lorsqu’elle a été testée positive au VIH il y a 10 ans, était de se marier et surtout de devenir un jour l’heureuse maman d’une petite fille en bonne santé. Première Nigériane à avoir révélé publiquement sa séropositivité, cette jeune femme dynamique de 29 ans a accouché en 2006 d’une petite fille séronégative, grâce au programme de prévention de la transmission du virus de la mère à l’enfant (PTME), qui permet de réduire considérablement le risque d’infection du nouveau-né grâce à un cocktail d’antirétroviraux (ARV) administré à la mère et au bébé. Kathmandu, 10 May - People living with HIV and Aids are holding rallies across Nepal in protest at what they say is an inadequate government response to the pandemic. They complain that health authorities are failing to provide care to the increasing numbers of infected people. About 75,000 Nepalis are thought to be HIV positive. Their numbers are growing but clinics and hospitals in more than half the country have no special provisions to care for them. Protesters say there are not enough trained or competent medical staff, even though the government's HIV-Aids response programme is well funded by foreign donors. (IRIN)

Launched on March 1st, the nonprofit HIVConnect.net is a unique site that connects all sectors of the HIV/AIDS community. This new social network is a place of free dialogue for people with HIV/AIDS, Community Based Organizations, AIDS Service Organizations, and the family / friends of HIV-positive people. The site brings organizations together with each other and their clients on-line, taking the concept of a local "drop in center" to the internet. The goal of HIVConnect.net is to deepen the interaction between clients and the organizations that seek to support them.

May 2007 - mothers2mothers (m2m) has developed a unique model at the community level that is cost effective, easily replicable, scalable and adaptable to any culture. m2m trains and employs HIV positive mothers who have themselves benefited from the services to become ‘Mentor Mothers’. These Mentors become an integral element of clinical prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) care. Injecting drug use is estimated to account for nearly one-third of new infections outside sub-Saharan Africa, but fewer than 8% of injecting drug users receive HIV prevention services. Drug users not only face physical risks of HIV infection, they are also vulnerable to HIV because of their social and legal status. The UNAIDS Best Practice review May 2007 features several HIV prevention programmes that prove ‘high coverage site’ programmes reaching out to more than 50% of the injecting drug user populations with focused prevention interventions, can prevent, stabilize and even reverse HIV epidemics among injecting drug users.

The AIDSCAREWATCH Monitor, Issue 26, May 2007, focusses on injecting drug use that is driving HIV epidemics in many countries around the world. There is evidence that such epidemics can be averted, halted and reversed if comprehensive HIV programmes targeting drug users are put into place. There is increasing recognition that prevention, treatment, care and impact mitigation must be planned and delivered with the full inclusion of people living with and affected by HIV. However, as a result of HIV-related stigma, many people still feel unable to disclose their HIV status and to participate in HIV programmes or use HIV services. AIDS related stigma has pernicious effect on the epidemic’s prevention. What factors perpetuate and contribute to stigma against those infected with HIV/AIDS? This report by Change and International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) finds that causal factors of AIDS stigma were similar across all four countries studied - Ethiopia, Tanzania, Vietnam and Zambia - and that woman bore the brunt of it. ICRW and its partners have also developed an HIV stigma-reduction toolkit based on this report.
