Aujourd’hui, à travers le monde, moins de mères décèdent de complications liées à la naissance d’un enfant, constatent les auteurs d’une étude publiée dans la célèbre revue médicale The Lancet. Une très bonne nouvelle pour nous toutes et tous!

Le traitement de femmes séropositives avec des médicaments antirétroviraux avant, durant et après la naissance a joué un rôle majeur dans la réduction de la mortalité maternelle. Quand les futures mères sont traitées, leurs bébés encourent un moins grand risque d’être eux-mêmes infecté, et une maman en bonne santé représente la meilleure assurance-vie pour son enfant. Dans les régions connaissant une forte prévalence du VIH et où la prévention du VIH et le traitement du sida sont encouragés, la santé de la mère et de l’enfant s’est améliorée.

Il reste pourtant beaucoup à faire: cette étude montre aussi qu’en 2008, près d’une mère sur cinq dans le monde est décédée des conséquences du sida. En Afrique du Sud, on estime même que plus de 50 pour cent des décès de mères sont imputables au VIH.

La prévention et le traitement du VIH/sida représentent aussi une mesure de promotion de la santé de la mère et de l’enfant. Il est donc faux et contre-productif de mettre en concurrence programmes antisida et programmes de santé générale. Ce qu’il faut, c’est un engagement politique accru et davantage d’argent, aussi bien pour les programmes antisida que pour les programmes de santé générale.

C’est là un important consensus qui s’est dégagé parmi les participant-e-s à la Conférence d’aidsfocus.ch du 14 avril 2010 à Berne, consacrée à l’avenir de la lutte mondiale contre le sida. La plate-forme suisse «VIH/sida et coopération internationale» continuera de se mobiliser pour l’accès de toutes et tous à une prise en charge globale en termes de prévention du VIH, de traitement du sida, de soins et de soutien aux personnes touchées. Et elle restera mobilisée, aux côtés d’autres acteurs de la société civile suisse, pour accroître la dotation financière de l’aide suisse au développement: celle-ci doit passer à court terme à 0,5 pour cent et à moyen terme à 0,7 pour cent du produit intérieur brut.

Bern, 14. April 2010 - aidsfocus.ch: In Afrika, Zentralasien und Osteuropa hat Aids nach wie vor katastrophale Auswirkungen. Deshalb darf Aids nicht von der politischen Agenda verschwinden. Anlässlich der aidsfocus.ch Fachtagung fordern Schweizer Entwicklungsorganisationen: Die Schweiz soll sich finanziell für die internationale Aids- und Gesundheitszusammenarbeit stärker engagieren… Die TeilnehmerInnen der Tagung sind sich einig, dass es sowohl mehr Gelder für die internationale Aidsarbeit als auch für die internationale Gesundheitszusammenarbeit braucht. Berne 14 avril 2010 - La crise économique pousse les Etats à serrer les cordons de la bourse en matière de lutte contre le VIH. Alertées, des organisations de développement se sont réunies en forum à Berne. Elles exigent davantage de moyens, notamment en Suisse. Les autorités suisses, qui "se sont engagées à respecter les objectifs du millénaire", sont appelées à agir. L'aide au développement doit être rapidement augmentée à 0,5%, puis à plus long terme à 0,7%, a tonné aidsfocus.ch.

Anlässlich der Fussball-WM 2010 in Südafrika organisiert Solidarmed verschiedene Anlässe und hat ein Themenheft von SolidarMed aktuell zu Fussball gegen HIV herausgegeben. Am 30. Mai 2010 findet in Luzern ein öffentliches Podium zum Thema Gesundheit, HIV/Aids und Fussball in Afrika statt, mit prominenten TeilnehmerInnen: u.a. mit Marcel Stutz, dem ehemaligen Schweizer Botschafter in Zimbabwe (heute ist er Afrika-Verantwortlicher beim EDA) und Tozim, Musiker und Projektleiter Young Africa against Aids and HIV – Yaaah. Am 11. Juni 2010 werden die SolidarMed Teams aus dem Süden Afrikas und aus der Schweiz auf besondere Art an der WM teilnehmen.

About 22 million people, or 67 percent of the worldwide total live in Sub-Saharan Africa, where the pandemic is most severe. Meanwhile, more than 15 million children are orphans due to AIDS. In 2001, World Vision launched the Hope Initiative to respond to the HIV pandemic focusing on a community led response. In Africa, these communities have women, men, girls and boys who are making remarkable contributions in response to HIV and AIDS. This book honours those people.

April 2010 – Die von Swiss Aids Care International finanzierte Newlands Clinic in Simbabwe hat ein wichtiges Etappenziel erreicht: Sie behandelt 3'000 HIV- und Aidspatienten und bildet pro Jahr rund 100 einheimische Ärztinnen und Ärzte sowie Krankenpflegerinnen und -pfleger aus. Wie bei keiner anderen Krankheit spielt bei der Behandlung der HIV-Infektion die Therapietreue eine zentrale Rolle. „Nebst der medizinischen Behandlung engagieren wir uns deshalb in der Ausbildung des einheimischen Gesundheitspersonals, damit sie Menschen mit HIV und Aids behandeln, beraten und psychosozial begleiten können“, sagt Prof. Dr. Ruedi Lüthy, Gründer und Leiter der Klinik.

Genève, 14 avril 201 0 - Un nouveau rapport publié dans la revue médicale The Lancet met en évidence une nette diminution du nombre annuel de décès féminins liés à la grossesse ou à l’accouchement, la première depuis des décennies. Les chercheurs estiment que ce nombre est passé de 526 300 décès en 1980 à 343 900 en 2008. Ce rapport souligne que l’épidémie de VIH en cours freine les progrès de réduction de la mortalité maternelle. Il est avéré que l’administration en temps utile d’antirétroviraux aux femmes enceintes séropositives, intervention peu onéreuse et efficace, réduit sensiblement le risque de transmission du VIH à leurs enfants. Fin 2008 toutefois, seulement 45 % d’entre elles bénéficiaient de ce traitement dans les pays à faibles revenus et à revenus intermédiaires. Des progrès dans ce domaine ne seront possibles qu’en améliorant la qualité des données et en intégrant les programmes de prévention de la transmission du VIH de la mère à l’enfant à l’agenda de la sa nté reproductive au sens large. Geneva, 19 April 2010 - The International AIDS Society (IAS) today welcomed the new study that documents significant reductions in maternal deaths worldwide. "New data on decreases in maternal deaths show once again that access to HIV prevention, treatment and care is essential to a comprehensive approach to improving the health of poor and vulnerable people," said IAS Executive Director Robin Gorna. "HIV services do not compete with other health priorities. They support them by reducing all-cause mortality; improving maternal health; improving child health by preventing and treating HIV disease in children and reducing diarrheal and other diseases through safe breastfeeding.

Johannesburg, 30 March 2010 - Men in rural Zimbabwe are taking a hands-on approach to pregnancy - and to preventing mother-to-child HIV transmission. The UNICEF-sponsored “Male Champions” programme is working to get men involved in their partners’ pregnancies in the rural district of Mberengwa. The programme uses HIV-positive male caregivers to mobilize men and their partners to undergo HIV testing and access prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT). In most communities men are the decision-makers - they decide on whether to disclose HIV status, and they can chase their wives away after disclosure. (PlusNews)

1. March 2010 - The role of a mother in African families is even more essential to the well-being of a child than the role played by the breadwinner father, according to a study published in the latest issue of the journal Demography. If a child loses their mother before they are 15 years old, that child is likely to be shorter in height, poorer and have less schooling as than those who live with their mothers until that age. Being an orphan is not a temporary problem but has long-term, permanent effects persisting into adulthood. It fits in with other recent studies highlighting that the impact of HIV-AIDS is likely to be felt in Africa for generations to come. (ScienceDaily)

Berea District, 16 March 2010 – In 2007, the Government, with help from UNICEF and other partners, initiated a massive effort to improve the country's Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) services. To succeed, they needed to ensure that every clinic in the country could provide HIV testing and treatment. Lesotho became one of the first countries in the region to allow nurses to administer anti-retroviral (ARV) treatments, which greatly expanded access to these critical interventions in the remote areas of the country where fewer doctors are available. Johannesburg, 25 avril 2010 – Le Président Zuma a aujourd’hui lancé une campagne ambitieuse qui pourrait changer la face de l’épidémie de sida en Afrique du Sud et dans le monde. La campagne vise à effectuer 15 millions de dépistage sur le VIH d’ici l’année 2011, contre 2,5 millions en 2009. Le nombre de personnes dépistées a ainsi été multiplié par six en l’espace de deux ans seulement. Dans le cadre de cette campagne, 1,5 million de personnes recevront des traitements antirétroviraux d’ici à juin 2011, contre un million en 2009.

Johannesburg, 26. April 2020 – Südafrikas Präsident Jacob Zuma hat das Ergebnis seines eigenen HIV-Tests verkündet und damit für eine Aids-Kampagne in seinem von der Immunschwächekrankheit schwer getroffenen Land geworben. Nach sorgfältiger Überlegung habe er sich dazu entschieden, sein negatives Testergebnis - also die Bestätigung über die Nicht-Infizierung mit dem Aids-Erreger - mit den Südafrikanern zu teilen, sagte Zuma am Sonntag bei der Vorstellung einer Kampagne für HIV-Tests in Johannesburg. Er wolle damit „Offenheit“ demonstrieren und das Stigma und die Stille ausmerzen, die die Epidemie begleiteten. (Tages-Anzeiger on-line)

Nicht erst seit die Entwicklungsländer die Auswirkungen der globalen Wirtschaftskrise spüren, muss sich die Weltgemeinschaft diesen Grundproblemen stellen: der extremen Armut, der wachsenden sozialen Ungleichheit und der Ausgrenzung breiter Gruppen. Die Vereinten Nationen haben weitreichende Verpflichtungen zur Bekämpfung der extremen Armut beschlossen. Die internationalen NRO erkannten die Symbolkraft der MDGs und nahmen die Selbstverpflichtung der Geber und Regierungen zum Anlass, deren konkrete Politik an den Erfolgen zur Umsetzung der Millenniumsziele zu messen. Die Broschüre des Aktionsbündnisses gegen Aids soll dieses Engagement unterstützen. (2010)

Preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV to reach the UNGASS and Millennium Development Goals. The purpose of this document is to define WHO’s commitment to global and country support to scale up access to prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV services and integrate these services with maternal, newborn and child health programmes. The objectives included in PMTCT strategic vision 2010–2015 illustrate WHO’s ongoing commitment to the United Nations General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS) goals on PMTCT and strengthening support for PMTCT within the context of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).(2010)

The effects of the AIDS epidemics on lives and livelihoods are dramatic, yet the economic consequences are difficult to measure. This study focuses on Malawi, it addresses both the short and long term impact of HIV/AIDS by bringing together and analysing findings from qualitative and quantitative studies on the spread and impact of the epidemic. Key conclusions include that HIV/AIDS and poverty are mutually reinforcing - it acts as a forceful vehicle for impoverishment at the individual and household level and results in increased income and asset inequality. Poor households with small economic buffers are particularly exposed to the economic consequences of HIV/AIDS. For these, illness and death in the family due to AIDS often entails economic disaster. The guide includes sections which focus on action points and provides useful information on key issues to consider when developing prevention programmes for people living with HIV. Worldwide, extensive experience, evidence and information is available showing what works and what does not when implementing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). This tool attempts to document the most importance evidence, in a way that is useful to organisations with limited time and resources, working in the day to day practice of SHRH education for young people. It has been tested in workshops in South Africa and Pakistan partner organisations who implement SRHR/HIV interventions for young people.
