Dear reader

When talking to a group of women living with HIV in a Zimbabwean village, I saw many babies on their mother’s lap. A little surprised I asked them whether the babies were HIV-positive or HIV-negative. Spontaneous and with big smiles on their faces, the women hold up their babies: Our children are healthy!

This experience during the FEPA study trip to Zimbabwe was very moving: it is the joy of HIV-positive mothers to give their children a healthy start in life. This picture in mind motivates me to continue in the commitment for a future world without AIDS, a commitment to ensure that all people who are living with HIV have access to treatment and that all children are born healthy.

Due to the global commitment and the massive expansion of access to treatment, the spread of the AIDS epidemic could be controlled. For the first time we can speak of a world without AIDS as a viable vision. But the success also brings with it the danger that AIDS might disappear from our perception and may no longer be mentioned in the global development agenda after 2015.

The platform aidsfocus.ch celebrates its 10the anniversary on 28 November 2013 in Bern/ Wabern. Reason enough to celebrate, but also to reenergize in order to keep up our struggle for world without AIDS. Your are most kindly invited to celebrate with us. Bern | “Looking back – moving forward” is the topic of the Annual Meeting 2013 of aidsfocus.ch. Partners will discuss what worked well, what are missed opportunities what can we do more or different, and how can we refresh our approach and commitment. There will be a brief formal part with annual report and decision on the theme of the aidsfocus.ch conference 2014. Le premier décembre est la journée mondiale contre le Sida! L’ONUSIDA fête la Journée mondiale de lutte contre le sida 2013 sous la devise : « Zero Aids related deaths - Zéro décès lié au sida ». L’Aide Suisse contre le Sida reprend cette stratégie internationale dans sa nouvelle campagne pour la Journée mondiale contre le sida 2013, sous le titre « Pour une Suisse sans sida ». En Suisse aussi en effet, il serait à la fois prématuré de relâcher les efforts dans la lutte contre le VIH et faux de minimiser le virus. Chaque année, ce sont entre 600 et 800 personnes en Suisse qui reçoivent un résultat de test positif au VIH. Il s’agit là d’un objectif ambitieux qui ne pourra être atteint que si tous les acteurs travaillent ensemble : monde politique, industrie, recherche et société.

Gemeinsam gegen HIV/Aids: Der Fotokalender 2014 zeigt Menschen mit HIV/Aids, die erlebt haben: Über die Krankheit zu sprechen, ist befreiend. Im Rahmen der Arbeit einer HIV- Selbsthilfegruppe im Süden Tansanias entstand die Idee zu einem Kalender mit Portraits von Betroffenen. Der Anstoss dazu kam von den Betroffenen selbst. Sie möchten damit gegen die gesellschaftliche Stigmatisierung kämpfen und andere HIV-Infizierte zu einem offen Umgang mit der Krankheit ermutigen. Eine Fotografin begleitete Frauen und Männer in ihrem Alltag. Bestellung:

Geneva, 20 November 2013 — Accelerated progress has been reported in most parts of the world. However, there are worrying signs that some regions and countries are not on track to meet global targets and commitments on HIV. In many cases stalled progress is due to inadequate access to essential HIV services. Key populations including men who have sex with men, people who use drugs, transgender people and sex workers are often blocked from accessing life-saving services. In 2012, an estimated 35.3 million people globally were living with HIV, 2.3 million people became newly infected with HIV, and 1.6 million people died from AIDS-related illnesses. (UNAIDS)

Bern, 18 novembre 2013 - Quelque 331 diagnostics de VIH ont été déclarés à l’Office fédéral de la sante publique (OFSP) jusqu’à fin juin 2013. Pour l’ensemble de l’année, on obtient donc par extrapolation quelque 660 diagnostics. Comparée aux 645 cas de l’année précédente, il s’agit-là d’une évolution stable. Le nombre de nouveaux diagnostics, en recul jusqu’en 2011, est reparti à la hausse en 2012 tant chez les hommes ayant des rapports sexuels avec des hommes (HSH) que chez les hétérosexuels. Le VIH, la syphilis et la gonorrhée ont été diagnostiques nettement plus fréquemment dans les cantons dotes de centres urbains (Genève, Zurich, Bâle-Ville et Lausanne) que dans le reste de la Suisse au premier semestre 2013. Ce contraste s’est toutefois quelque peu attenue au cours des dernières années, sauf dans le canton de Genève. (OFSP, Bulletin 47/13)
