Alliance joins call to reverse unpopular AIDS2020 host city decision
www.aidsalliance.org - "This week, the International AIDS Society announced its decision to name San Francisco and Oakland as host cities to the International AIDS Conference in 2020 (AIDS2020). Sadly, this decision does not consider the ongoing concerns raised by civil society organisations and key population networks on the adverse implications of this decision.
In response, the International HIV/AIDS Alliance has issued a joint statement with other key global civil society organisations, calling upon the IAS to re-evaluate this decision amidst a host of concerns, including the country's deteriorating human rights climate that could deny entry to those most impacted by HIV from the communities and countries we work in. We know that the voices of sex workers, people who use drugs, and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) activists simply have to be heard to ensure a strong, robust and meaningful response – silencing them by not allowing them to enter the US is simply not an option.
