Chère lectrice, cher lecteur,

«La distribution de préservatifs ne permet pas de dépasser le problème du sida», a déclaré dernièrement le pape Benoît XVI lors de son voyage en Afrique, «au contraire, elle augmente le problème». Une affirmation absurde, dangereuse et irresponsable. Absurde, car elle contredit toutes les études scientifiques sur le sujet, qui confirment l’efficacité des préservatifs, ce qui en fait le moyen de protection le plus important et le plus abordable, indissociable de toute approche globale de la prévention du VIH. Dangereuse, car ce genre de déclaration pontificale ne peut que favorise la propagation de l’épidémie et son cortège de conséquences dramatiques: maladie, stigmatisation, décès. Et elle est irresponsable. Oui, il est irresponsable, de la part du plus haut dignitaire de l’Eglise catholique, sur un continent déjà lourdement touché par le sida et où 17% de la population est catholique pratiquante, de dissuader les gens de se protéger et de protéger les autres contre le VIH. Ce message du pape exprime une indifférence effrayante à l’égard des membres les plus faibles de la société, notamment à l’égard des femmes, qui sont beaucoup plus vulnérables et particulièrement touchées par le VIH/sida.

Il faut espérer que les propos du Vatican ne soient pas pris pour argent comptant – et que les ecclésiastiques et laïques catholiques vivant dans la réalité continuent d’informer les gens en leur âme et conscience et de les inciter à se protéger et protéger les autres. Les partenaires du Sud d’aidsfocus.ch, parmi lesquels des organisations catholiques, sont très actifs dans la prévention du VIH et la prise en charge de personnes touchées par le sida en Afrique, Asie, Amérique latine et Europe de l’Est. Et l’information exhaustive et objective sur la transmission du VIH et sur les moyens de s’en prémunir – y compris par le préservatif – fait partie intégrante de leur travail. Pour aidsfocus.ch, tous les êtres humains, indépendamment de leur âge, sexe, origine ou appartenance religieuse, ont le droit de décider par eux-mêmes de leur vie et de leur sexualité. L’accès à une information non biaisée et à une prise en charge globale – prévention, traitement et soins – est un droit humain fondamental, et une telle approche ne saurait faire abstraction du préservatif.

Qui a dit que réligion ne rimait pas avec prévention? Les dignitaires et autorités ecclésiastiques continuent de jouir d’un grand respect dans beaucoup de sociétés. D’où leur responsabilité morale. Dûment sensibilisés et formés, ils peuvent être d’un apport précieux à la prévention du VIH et de la stigmatisation. C’est l’un des thèmes qu’abordera aidsfocus.ch lors de sa Conférence du 6 mai à Berne «Culture and condoms. Integrating approaches to HIV and AIDS». Le révérend Christo Greyling, conseiller international «VIH/sida et Eglise» auprès de World Vision International, nous fera partager son expérience dans la sensibilisation et la formation de leaders chrétiens et musulmans.

1. mars 2009 - La déclaration sur le préservatif a choqué l’Europe. Des voix africaines invitent à la nuance et estiment qu’elle sera sans effet. «La distribution de préservatifs ne permet pas de dépasser le problème du sida, au contraire, elle augmente le problème.» La réponse du pape Benoît XVI à une question que lui posaient des journalistes dans l’avion qui le conduisait mardi dernier au Cameroun continue de faire le tour du monde. Sous nos latitudes, elle a soulevé un tollé de réactions.

March 2009 - Distributing condoms is not the answer to curbing the spread of HIV in Africa, Pope Benedict XVI said on Tuesday while heading to Yaounde, Cameroon, as part of a seven-day pilgrimage to the continent. "You can't resolve it with the distribution of condoms," Benedict said, adding, "On the contrary, it increases the problem". According to Benedict, addressing HIV/AIDS will require a "two-fold" solution. He said, "The first is a humanization of sexuality, spiritual renewal which brings with it a new way of behaving ... secondly, a true friendship, especially for those who are suffering, a willingness to make personal sacrifices". In its position paper, aidsfocus.ch states: “Multiple prevention approaches must be employed in combination in order to support individual behaviour change, influence the social norms regarding risk behaviours and address social, economic, legal and policy barriers to effective prevention. Prevention programmes that ensure that the whole spectrum of prevention options is available to those most at risk, including access to and use of condoms and sterile injecting equipment, have been shown to substantially reduce new HIV infection throughout the world.” (November 2006)

“This Position Statement by WHO, UNAIDS and UNFPA provides the basis for condom promotion, documenting why condoms continue to be a critical element in comprehensive and sustainable approaches to HIV prevention and care. Prevention is the mainstay of the response to AIDS. Condoms are an integral and essential part of comprehensive prevention and care programmes, and their promotion must be accelerated. In 2007, an estimated 2.7 million people became newly infected with HIV. The Hague, 19 March 2009 – “Cordaid does not agree with the statement of Pope Benedict XVI that the use of condoms could worsen the AIDS problem. Scientifically there is no doubt that a proper use of condoms can prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS. This scientific evidence should also be taken seriously by the Roman Catholic Church.” Cordaid partners in Africa “ensure that people are provided with appropriate information on HIV/AIDS, how it is transmitted and how to avoid becoming infected and information about condoms is provided to the public.”

Quel rapport entre la noix de cola et la prévention du VIH? La noix de cola est répandue dans beaucoup de cultures africaines, où elle revêt depuis des siècles une importante fonction sociale. La noix de cola se révèle également très utile dans le travail de prévention auprès des migrant-e-s de pays d’Afrique subsaharienne: son usage symbolique aide les médiateurs et médiatrices à entrer en relation et à aborder des sujets sensibles. Lors de la Conférence aidsfocus.ch du 6 mai 2009 à Berne Noël Tshibangu, coordinateur du programme Afrimedia présentera et analysera ce projet.

Kulturell geprägte Vorstellungen über Gesundheit und Krankheit beeinflussen den Umgang der Menschen mit HIV und Aids – und so auch den Erfolg von internationalen HIV- und Aidsprogrammen. Im Hintergrundartikel zur Fachtagung von aidsfocus.ch wird für eine verstärkte Berücksichtigung von Kultur in Programmen und Projekten plädiert. Der von der Aids-Hilfe Schweiz durchgeführte Grundkurs bietet Berufsleuten, die neu im HIV/Aids-Bereich oder maximal seit 2 Jahren im Bereich tätig sind, ein solides Grundwissen für ihre Arbeit. Er besteht aus vier thematischen Modulen (Fernstudium) und aus zwei Kurstagen mit vertiefender Weiterbildung. Dieses Jahr findet die Grundlagenschulung am 14. und 28. Mai 2009 in Zürich statt. Seit ihrer Geburt ist Jennifer Annen HIV-positiv. Mit vier hat sie ihre Mutter, mit dreizehn ihre Adoptivschwester verloren. Trotz Leid und Ungewissheit ist die Sechzehnjährige voller Zuversicht und träumt von einer Weltreise. „An deiner Stelle würde ich mich umbringen.“ Das muss Jennifer Annen oft hören. Sie hat sich daran gewöhnt. Die 16-Jährige hat gelernt, mit derart gedankenlosen Aussagen zu leben. Genau wie mit dem Virus.

Rio de Janeiro, 24 mars 2009 - Le nombre total de nouveaux cas de tuberculose est resté stable en 2007 et le pourcentage des nouveaux malades dans la population mondiale a légèrement baissé, comme il le fait régulièrement depuis 2004. C'est ce que révèle le dernier rapport mondial sur la lutte contre la tuberculose rendu public aujourd'hui par l'OMS. Ce rapport établit par ailleurs qu'un décès par tuberculose sur quatre est lié au VIH, c’est-à-dire une proportion deux fois plus élevée qu'auparavant. En 2007, 1,37 million de nouveaux cas de tuberculose ont été enregistrés chez les personnes infectées par le VIH ainsi que 456 000 décès.

1. mars 2009 - Le nombre de personnes âgées vivant avec le VIH pourrait être en hausse dans le monde, mais les médecins pensent rarement à les dépister au VIH, retardant ainsi le diagnostic, selon un article publié dans le bulletin mensuel de l’Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS). Ces personnes ont généralement moins de relations sexuelles protégées que les plus jeunes, et plus une personne vieillit, plus la progression du VIH vers le sida est rapide. (IRIN PlusNews)

Hargeisa, 27 March 2009 - HIV-positive people in Somalia live with constant stigma, are ostracised and often even thrown out of their homes for fear that they might infect their neighbours. Islamic religious leaders in Somaliland, some of whom have become involved in HIV prevention efforts, are now stepping in to persuade communities to treat people with HIV more humanely. Islam has an enormous influence on everyday life in Somalia, and religious leaders have the power to sway the population's views on HIV/AIDS.(PlusNews)

Amsterdam, 20 March 2009 – “Health Action International (HAI) has learned that the UNITAID shipment of generic HIV/AIDS medicines, seized at Amsterdam Schiphol airport, has been released by the Dutch customs authorities. Whilst we are delighted that the authorities have taken this action and, in the end, shown the appropriate consideration for access to essential medicines in developing countries, a lesson must be learnt from this incident. The intervention in the legitimate trade of life-saving generic medicines should never have occurred and must not be allowed to happen again."

Johannesburg, 16 March 2009 - AIDS activists in South Africa appear to have won the final round of a protracted battle to prevent vitamin salesman Matthias Rath from promoting his unproven remedies to patients living with HIV and AIDS. Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), an AIDS lobby group, reported that Rath had failed to file court papers in time to uphold his appeal against a High Court order issued in June 2008, banning him from publishing further advertisements claiming that VitaCell, his multivitamin product, cured AIDS, or from continuing clinical trials of the product in the treatment of HIV/AIDS. UNAIDS has published a new guidance tool to increase understanding and use of the community systems strengthening (CSS) funding priority of the Global Fund. The tool is designed to assist those involved in writing proposals for Global Fund Round 9 submissions and aims to ensure that CSS is better understood by community based organisations, civil society, key population networks, country coordinating mechanisms, ministries and the UN family. Community learning processes are crucial to increasing resilience to HIV/AIDS in Africa’s remote rural areas. This paper describes experiences of using the “How to Live Positively” discovery-learning process to empower rural communities in Benin, Malawi, Nigeria and Zimbabwe to reduce their vulnerability to HIV/AIDS, improve household nutrition and clean up their environment to reduce opportunistic infections. This process also promotes “treatment preparedness” amongst resource-poor farmers. (2009)

The case study outlines the programme in Burkina Faso and Zimbabwe over the last 3 years in working through the local church to challenge and change culturally and Biblically based attitudes on gender and sexual rights in the context of HIV and AIDS. The projects took a relationship based approach to gender with the church communities. The programme has seen some amazing success and gives stories of transformation of those who participated. Family mechanisms of support should become the focus of efforts to help children affected by HIV/AIDS worldwide, according to the Joint Learning Initiative on Children and HIV/AIDS. The study - called "Home Truths: Facing the Facts on Children, AIDS and Poverty" - calls on initiatives that aim to help the two million HIV-positive children worldwide, as well as the estimated 12 million AIDS orphans, to refocus their efforts on the family. Human rights are fundamental to all HIV and AIDS responses, and although their importance has been recognised since the first global AIDS strategy in 1987, they do not yet receive sufficient political commitment. The promotion and protection of human rights are necessary to empower individuals and communities to respond to HIV and AIDS, reducing vulnerability to HIV infection and the adverse impact of HIV and AIDS on those affected. The incidence and spread of HIV are disproportionately high among those who already lack human rights protection and experience discrimination, such as women, children, poor people, and other socially, culturally and economically marginalised groups. St. Gallen | Der 1. Deutsch-Österreichisch-Schweizerische AIDS-Kongress (SÖDAK) vom 24. – 27. Juni 2009 steht unter dem Motto „Prepare for the long run“. Am Kongress nehmen hauptsächlich - aber nicht nur - Spezialistinnen aus dem gesamten deutschsprachigen Raum teil. Die AIDS Epidemie ist noch lange nicht besiegt, weder in Europa noch weltweit. Die Prävention muss ein zentrales Anliegen bleiben. Der Kongress wird sich aber auch internationalen Themen widmen, mit einem speziellen Fokus auf die zunehmende AIDS-Problematik in Ost-Europa.
